RCA Small Wonder EZ300HD Review

Started by zbowling · 9 months ago

Last night I got the EZ300HD pocket HD camera from RCA from Circut City. It was $129 ($140 after taxes). I had a chance to play with the older Small Wonder EZ200 which I really enjoyed.
The great part about this camera is that it records at 720p (1280×720). You can see a sa ... Continue reading »

  • Zac,

I bought this unit as well. I feel like the picture is much better outside in natural light, which I guess is true with most cameras. Question for you, have you found a way to get rid of the display icons when you are playing this on a television? I might burn these clips in real time to a DVD burner I have and I don't want the display icons showing. Please e-mail an answer to: sdavid@bachelorcreek.com Thanks
  • it doesn't look like you can. possibly over HDMI... that sucks :-(
  • Hey Zac, just saw your video on the RCA Small Wonder EZ300 HD. Thanks for that video. I'm trying to decide between this and the Flip Mino. I know one big advantage for the RCA was the self-recording flip out device, but besides that....anything in particular that should differentiate the two or make one better? I'm only looking to post videos online and want the better quality and simplicity. Don't want to run into any complications when putting it online. I also might record while driving. Would appreciate your input. Thanks, Jody

  • I found that even with decent light, indoor video was extremely bad quality for 720p, with a significant amount of grain present.

Honestly comparing indoor to outdoor video side by side appears to be from two completely different cameras quality wise.
  • Cory,
So you're saying if I buy the RCA EZ300 and record in the 640 x 480, it should come out as good as the Flip? It's just that the RCA has the self-recording thing that pops out. Battery doesn't last as long as the Flip though. At that 640 x 480.... do they match eachothers quality?
  • Sorry about the delayed response. I have not tried lower resolutions yet, since the purpose of me getting this was for the HD video. My standard Cannon camera can do 640x480.

I will check indoor at 640x480 when I get home from work and verify if it is noisy, but I would guess it would be.
  • Seesmic video reply from Disqus.
  • I've got the 200...good except for the codec issue. Can't play videos in Windows Media Player..audio probs there...audio sped up, and everyone sounds like alvin and the chipmunks. I can play them in VLC, or just use a converter prog and convert them to another format. Not sure that it's worth it to update to the 300, other than the screen size.
    still pondering.....thanks for the review!!!
  • Is anyone having problems updating the firmware on the 300ahd? I keeps telling me that the package is corrupt and I need to download another version.
  • Where did you get the firmware, I've been looking all over for it? I'm having an issue where the device starts, goes into wanting me to set the clock for a second then shutting off. I need a way to reset it or upgrade the firmware to bring it back to factory settings. Something got glitched in the software.
  • Does anyone know how to put them on macs? I pluged mine in and loaded the videos on my mac but when I play them, there is only sound, no picture. Anyone have any idea how to make them compatable?
  • You can install Perian and it will make it work. The audio is a Microsoft codec so Flip4Mac makes that part work, but the h264 video codec is encoded a little odd so Mac's decoder doesn't like, but Perian will fix Quicktime so that it can. http://www.perian.org/
  • Okay so I downloaded perian, but is there some sort of setting I have to change to make the video appear with the sound? I clicked on it, but there wasnt much you could do with it.
  • you need flip4mac to get sound. I though you had it if you got sound before. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/p...
  • Does this camera have a standard tripod mount?
  • No what would that have to do with anything? Its the camera that is in the picture at the very top of this page.
  • yes. it has the standard mount.
  • Alright, so what do I need to do to get the pictures to show up on my mac? I downloaded that program and Im not sure what to do next.
  • It's a Quicktime plugin. Just have to install it. Then Quicktime will play the videos. Not much to it.
  • Alright its still not showing the video. It does show a picture of the video on the file, but it doesn't show any video, just sound.
  • i can open it in quicktime using perian, but how do i edit the video? is that another download or can i somehow export it to imovie? it is not letting me open it in imovie.
  • iMovie is one of the most picky softwares. You can use ffmpegx above to convert the video pretty easy but its a few steps.

  • So if I download ffmpegx it will make it so I can use iMovie?
  • Oh also another thing. I have downloaded perain and no picture is showing on quicktime. Do I need to change any settings at all like in quicktime or perain? I cant think of anything else to do.
  • Nevermind. I figured it out.
  • Got this camcorder and love the ease of use for filming videos. However when
I try to upload them to my computer and play them, I am able to see the tags for teh video files but when I click play it is just a black box. Does anyone know how I can remedy this. i believe I have to install a special code program and have tried to do that but being computer inept, i can't seem to get it to work after installation. Are there specific setting that i need to change?

    Thanks,

    Chris
  • great blog and article
  • I adore it. For somebody that just requires an easy thing, I suspect this is great. I only wish it had some other color selections though. Best camcorder stores in usa
  • I have a question how does the picture look if you watch it on your tv? I want to buy one but I have been reading reviews and on the older models people were saying picture when seen on a tv looks grainy and boxy. How is this one?
  • This is quite impressive, I am pleased to read this post, keep posts like this coming, you totally rock!
